MY MOM JAYNE composer's statement

MY MOM JAYNE required a score that could support Mariska Hargitay's complex emotional journey while bringing her legendary mother Jayne Mansfield to life for contemporary audiences who might be unfamiliar with her mid-twentieth century fame. As the composer, my primary goal was to help tell this unique and deeply personal story about love, family, compassion, and forgiveness in a way that could be felt by all audiences on a universal level.

It was also important for the film to have a personality as unique as its subjects, so I crafted the score with a distinctive sound palette blending Golden-age Hollywood grandiosity with intimate piano and strings. Shimmering bells and ethereal ambiences were also employed to represent the fairytale aspects (both bright and dark) of Jayne's story.

Each of the film’s 47 original music cues received careful attention to thematic development and emotional context. The score employs several musical motifs to represent recurring emotional threads; Mariska’s lifelong sense of absence, the siblings’ bittersweet memories of their mother, the buried secret, Jayne’s ambition, and the jaw-dropping arc of Jayne’s rise to fame and downfall.

I am incredibly proud of the results of this collaboration with Mariska and of the strong emotional connection the film is making with its viewers.
